DTES Food & Wellness Hub
320 Alexander Street

With the generous support of the City of Vancouver and BC Housing, Watari has spearheaded the establishment of a centralized DTES Food & Wellness Hub at 320 Alexander Street. Since 2023, we have been working hard to transform this space into an accessible, multi-purpose community hub with food and culture programming, laundry and shower services, on-site counselling and Elder support, and other comprehensive wraparound supports.

While Watari manages the overall operations, this is a collaborative community space run in partnership with Heart Tattoo Society, Moccasin Mafia, and Uya’am Gaak. Community groups Lotus Life and Better Life Foundation access our kitchen space to support food security in the neighborhood. Our low barrier peer employment program directly engages the community we serve to support with renovations, maintenance, and running programs and services at the hub.  Together we are working hard to make this an inclusive, welcoming space by and for the DTES community.

Watari believes that together we can build a community that fosters welcome over displacement, community care over policing, and refuge rather than dispersal – so that everyone can find a safe space for respite from the cold!

This winter, we were proud to open up the Hub as an Emergency Weather Response Space daytime warming centre, offering a much-needed place for rest, hot meals, snacks, warm clothes, first aid support (including hypothermia and frostbite), laundry and shower services, art activities, and more. Watari also partnered with Ross-Aoiki House to offer the Nest Shelter, Vancouver’s only dedicated 2 spirit, trans, and non-binary overnight shelter.
